Free Jazz Mix

This is a free jazz mix I did back in November 2001. I did the mix digitally on the fly using about 20 instances WinAmp opened simultaneously. It is very abstract and can be a bit abrasive, so be warned. At times, I picked all of the tracks from an album and played them simultaneously, building walls of sound that break into torrential cascades of chaotic improvisation.

Incidentally, although the mix itself qualifies as free jazz, most of the included tracks are not technically labeled as such -- In fact, the mix consists of mostly modern and classic jazz tracks, including some highly recognizable tunes. See if you can recognize any of the tracks, it's like a game.

Hiphop White Label Series - Episode 6

I did this track back in 2003 with the assistance of Czech graffiti artist and hiphop producer Michal Gola. It has a drum beat provided by Bernard "Pretty" Purdie and some orchestral strings from who-knows-where. Mike and I used to joke that this song would be good for a car commercial.

City Recursion

This is a short video featuring the track Biomythos off my latest album Thread Soul. The video is by Vancouver, B.C. video jockey eightprime. He describes the process for creating the videos as "audio-responsive computer feedback," using photographs of buildings in Vancouver as source images. The result is a hypnotic, kaleidoscopic mixture of mathematical and fractal forms with modern architecture.

Urban Cocktail Hour

The R.V. track Weekend Amnesia is featured in this excellent jazz/hip-hop podcast: Urban Cocktail Hour 03-07-07

Here's a link to the MP3 directly: Download

And a description from the site:

Take some smoothed out lounge music, add a splash of hip hop, and stir in a little jazz for mixer and you have got an "Urban Cocktail Hour!" If you like your cocktail hours loungy and your hip hop jazzy, you'll love this mix!

For this month's mix, I found myself inspired to play music with a little more acid jazz and hip hop influence. I marked it "Explicit" because there are a few random curse words but it is far from offensive. There are plenty of sultry melodies, great vocals and smooth rapping to fill out this sexy hour long episode.

Hiphop White Label Series - Episode 5

Continuing in last week's theme of electro-hiphop, this week I present another excursion into minimal instrumental hiphop. This track was originally done as a demo for a collaboration with a well-known spoken word poet. The topic of the poem was New York, so the title stuck for the instrumental version. This version is a barebones, stripped-down beat. Like all tracks in the Hiphop White Label series, it is released to the public domain, so you are free to sample and use this song for whatever purposes you want.

Hiphop White Label Series - Episode 4

This week, I present a low-key instrumental hiphop beat I did a few years back. It is a minimal electro breakbeat with an atonal synth melody.

Better Late Than Never - Hiphop White Label Series 2

Much to my chagrin, the auto-emailer I use to publish the Hiphop White Label series did not work correctly and missed Episode 2 of the series. So, I'm posting it here. Better late than never, as they say.

This installment of the series focuses around a simple piano, bass and drum motif. It was composed around 2002-03 in collaboration with Michal Gola, a Czech graffiti artist and hiphop producer.

Hiphop White Label Series - Episode 3

This week's track, Wes Coast, brings together repetitive chill-out jazz guitar with a funky '70s sample that would not be out of place in Sweet Sweetback's Badass Song.
